Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an eight-year career with the Lions of Teranga.
The 34-year-old confirmed the decision on Sunday through his social media accounts, posting a tribute video highlighting some of the most memorable moments of his time with the national team.
“Jerejef (Thank you) Senegal,” Mendy wrote in Wolof, one of Senegal’s principal languages, as he bid farewell to international football.
Born in France, Mendy chose to represent Senegal and earned his first call-up in 2018 under then-head coach Aliou Cissé. Over the course of his international career, he made 59 appearances for the West African nation.
Mendy was a key figure in what is widely regarded as Senegal’s golden generation, playing alongside stars such as Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Idrissa Gana Gueye.
One of the defining moments of his career came in 2022 when Senegal won its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title after defeating Egypt in a dramatic penalty shootout.
He also represented Senegal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and remained an important member of the squad at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, where Senegal reached the Round of 16 before losing 3–2 to Belgium.
At club level, Mendy enjoyed a successful career across Europe, featuring for clubs including Marseille, Reims, Rennes, and Chelsea, where he won the UEFA Champions League in 2021. He currently plays for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.
The Senegal Football Federation and the national team paid tribute to the goalkeeper, praising his contribution to the country’s football history.
“There are careers that are measured in caps, trophies and statistics. And then there are those that are measured by the place they hold in the memory of a people. Edouard Mendy, your story with the Lions now belongs to that category.”
Mendy leaves the national team as one of Senegal’s most accomplished goalkeepers, having played a major role in the country’s rise as one of Africa’s strongest football nations.
