North Korea Denies Involvement in $6.3 Billion Binance Crypto Heist, Calls US Accusation Political Provocation

North Korea has rejected allegations by the United States that it was responsible for a cryptocurrency theft worth approximately $6.3 billion from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange.

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, dismissed the accusation as “absurd rhetoric” and described it as a serious political provocation against her country. Her comments were carried by North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on November 3, 2026.

The denial follows an announcement by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which attributed the theft to TraderTraitor, a hacking group linked to North Korea.

The FBI said the group was responsible for stealing more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance. The incident, which reportedly occurred around October 29, has been described as one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts on record.

Kim Yo Jong accused Washington of repeatedly associating North Korea with cybercrime incidents around the world. She argued that the allegations were intended to damage the country’s international reputation.

She also questioned the US government’s position on confiscated cryptocurrency, suggesting that the eventual destination of recovered funds could raise questions about who benefits from the incident. However, she did not provide evidence to support her implication.

The security breach has also raised concerns among Binance users, with customers withdrawing billions of dollars from the platform following the incident.

According to Reuters, Binance recorded net customer withdrawals of approximately $4.72 billion by Monday. The exchange’s co-CEO, Richard Teng, later said withdrawal activity had begun to stabilise, adding that the company remained in strong financial health.

Binance also said it had replenished about 95 per cent of the affected tokens. The disagreement between Washington and Pyongyang adds an international political dimension to an incident that has already raised fresh concerns about cryptocurrency security.

While the FBI has attributed the theft to a North Korean-linked hacking group, North Korea continues to deny responsibility. The allegations and denial remain central to the developing story.
