Portugal Seeks Reconciliation With Ronaldo After Dramatic Camp Exit

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is seeking to repair relations with Cristiano Ronaldo after the veteran forward abruptly left the national team’s training camp following tensions with head coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen on September 30 after speaking with FPF president Pedro Proença. The federation subsequently confirmed his departure, saying the remaining squad would continue preparations for its Nations League matches.

The dispute emerged after Ronaldo was left on the bench and did not play in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway. The decision came after he had started Portugal’s previous Nations League match against Wales. Jesus subsequently said Ronaldo was frustrated by the decision but denied that there had been a major rift between them.

Ronaldo later announced that he had decided to leave the national-team camp, saying he would explain the reasons for his decision to the Portuguese public “in due course.” He wished Portugal and his teammates well but did not provide further details about the disagreement.

Reports from Portugal indicate that the FPF now wants to mediate between Ronaldo and Jesus. The federation is reportedly expected to seek discussions with the 41-year-old captain in an effort to restore dialogue and prevent the dispute from ending his international career under strained circumstances.

There is, however, no confirmed agreement for Ronaldo to return to the national team. Jesus has also said that the squad remains focused on its matches and that Ronaldo’s departure has not disrupted the team’s unity.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record goalscorer and most-capped player. His sudden departure has therefore raised questions about whether the episode represents a temporary dispute or a more significant turning point in his international career. For now, the FPF’s reported reconciliation effort indicates that Portuguese football officials are seeking a resolution, but Ronaldo’s next step remains unclear.
