Jimoh Ibrahim Assumes Role as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN

Nigeria has officially resumed full diplomatic representation at the United Nations as Jimoh Ibrahim formally takes up his role as the country’s Permanent Representative to the global body. His appointment was sealed after he presented his letters of credence to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

The credential presentation ceremony, held at the UN Secretariat, marks a key diplomatic step, confirming Ibrahim’s authority to represent Nigeria on the international stage. With this, he officially assumes responsibility as the nation’s chief envoy to the United Nations, empowered to speak and act on behalf of the country in global discussions and negotiations.

Letters of credence are a longstanding diplomatic tradition, issued by a nation’s head of state to validate the appointment of ambassadors and permanent representatives. In this case, the documents serve as formal recognition of Ibrahim’s role and establish his direct line of engagement with the UN leadership.

Ibrahim’s appointment is part of a broader diplomatic repositioning by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who recently approved the deployment of 65 diplomats to various missions worldwide. This move comes after a prolonged period during which Nigeria operated without fully accredited ambassadors following the recall of envoys in September 2023.

During that interval, Nigeria’s foreign missions were largely managed by chargé d’affaires, with oversight from the Foreign Affairs Ministry led by Yusuf Tuggar. The absence of top-level diplomatic representatives had raised concerns about Nigeria’s global engagement and influence.

The new wave of appointments, including Ibrahim’s, is aimed at restoring Nigeria’s presence and strengthening its voice in international affairs. His posting to the United Nations is particularly significant, given the platform’s central role in addressing global issues such as security, climate change, economic development, and humanitarian challenges.

As Nigeria reestablishes its diplomatic footprint, Ibrahim’s role will be crucial in advancing the country’s interests, shaping policy discussions, and reinforcing its position within the international community.
