Tinubu Sacks Wale Edun, Appoints Taiwo Oyedele as New Finance Minister

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a minor reshuffle within Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council, signaling a renewed push to strengthen economic coordination and governance delivery. The decision sees the exit of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, alongside the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa.

The announcement was confirmed in an official statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Yomi Odunuga, and backed by a memo signed by George Akume.

According to the directive, Taiwo Oyedele has been appointed as the new Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, while Muttaqha Darma will assume office as Minister-designate for Housing and Urban Development. Both appointments are expected to take effect immediately, with a strict timeline set for transition.

The memo instructed outgoing ministers to conclude all handover processes to their successors or designated supervising officials no later than the close of business on Thursday, April 23, 2026. This timeline underscores the administration’s intent to ensure a smooth and efficient transition without disrupting ongoing government activities.

Explaining the rationale behind the reshuffle, Akume noted that the changes are part of broader efforts to enhance synergy within the cabinet and improve the delivery of key economic priorities. He emphasized that the move aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to drive measurable progress across critical sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Akume also clarified that the President acted within his constitutional authority, referencing Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empower the President to appoint and reassign members of the cabinet.

While acknowledging the contributions of the outgoing ministers, the Presidency expressed appreciation for their service and wished them success in their future endeavors. The statement further hinted that cabinet adjustments may continue as part of an ongoing effort to reinvigorate governance and ensure optimal performance.

Notably, Taiwo Oyedele’s elevation follows his recent appointment as Minister of State for Finance in March 2026, marking a swift rise within the administration. Meanwhile, Wale Edun had been part of the cabinet since August 2023, playing a central role in shaping Nigeria’s economic policies during his tenure.

With these changes, the Tinubu administration appears focused on recalibrating its team to better tackle economic challenges and deliver tangible results to Nigerians.
