Edo Assembly Impeaches Agbebaku After Rejecting His Resignation

The political crisis in the Edo State House of Assembly has taken another turn after lawmakers formally impeached former Speaker Blessing Agbebaku, eight days after he announced his resignation.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency I, announced his resignation on August 17, 2026. However, the Assembly has now rejected the resignation, insisting that it was not formally submitted and documented according to parliamentary procedure.

The development was announced during Monday’s plenary by the new Speaker, Yekini Idaiye, who said the impeachment notice had been signed by 17 lawmakers.

According to Idaiye, the notice had been presented by the Majority Leader during the previous sitting. He explained that the House proceeded with the impeachment because Agbebaku’s resignation had not been officially received and documented.

The motion was moved by Majority Leader Sunny Ojiezele and seconded by the member representing Etsako Central, Ahmed Waziri.

The Assembly therefore maintains that Agbebaku did not resign, but was instead formally removed through impeachment. Agbebaku’s departure from the leadership had already paved the way for Yekini Idaiye to emerge as Speaker.

Following Monday’s decision, Idaiye directed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession. He also warned that security agencies could be involved if the former Speaker failed to comply with the directive. The latest development adds another layer to the leadership crisis that has been unfolding within the Edo Assembly.

The dispute now raises questions about the circumstances surrounding Agbebaku’s initial resignation and the Assembly’s decision to replace the resignation with an impeachment.

While Agbebaku had publicly announced that he was stepping down, lawmakers argue that the resignation was never formally presented to and documented by the House.

For now, the Edo Assembly has made its position clear: Blessing Agbebaku is no longer regarded as a former Speaker who resigned, but as a Speaker who was impeached.
