Federal Government Declares August 25 Public Holiday for Eid ul Mawlid

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

The minister congratulated Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora, while encouraging citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility, service and peaceful coexistence.

Tunji-Ojo said the celebration should provide an opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen national unity and promote tolerance across religious and ethnic communities.

He also urged Nigerians to use the holiday to pray for peace, security and stability in the country, stressing that maintaining a peaceful and united Nigeria is a shared responsibility.

The declaration means Tuesday, August 25, will be a work-free day nationwide for the observance of Eid ul Mawlid.

The Federal Government also urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and demonstrate mutual respect, while wishing Muslim faithful a peaceful and meaningful Eid ul Mawlid celebration.

Eid ul Mawlid, also known as Mawlid an-Nabi, is observed by many Muslims to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad. In Nigeria, the occasion is traditionally marked by prayers, religious gatherings and reflections on the Prophet’s teachings.
