The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from his position amid reported moves by lawmakers to remove him through impeachment.
Agbebaku’s resignation took effect on Monday, August 17, 2026, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure as presiding officer of the state legislature. His media aide, Ivy Ebojele, confirmed the development in a brief statement, saying further details would be communicated later.
The resignation came as tensions reportedly intensified within the Assembly, with some lawmakers said to be preparing to initiate impeachment proceedings against the Speaker. The specific issues behind the latest move have not been fully disclosed.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, was elected Speaker of the eighth Edo State House of Assembly in June 2023. He initially served under the Peoples Democratic Party before defecting to the All Progressives Congress in May 2025.
His relationship with some members of the Assembly had previously come under strain. In 2024, Agbebaku suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach him and other principal officers, although the suspended lawmakers denied the allegations and described the action as politically motivated.
The latest resignation has created a fresh leadership transition in the Edo legislature. Reports indicate that lawmakers are now moving to determine who will take over the Speaker’s position, with Yekini Idaiyi, representing Akoko-Edo II, reportedly emerging as a possible successor.
The development adds another layer to the political dynamics within Edo State, particularly as lawmakers navigate competing interests within the ruling political structure.
