The Lagos State Government has taken another step toward building a more inclusive society with plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The proposed initiative is designed to improve identification, accessibility, and mobility while reinforcing the state’s commitment to equal opportunities for all residents.
The proposal was the focus of a strategic meeting between the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA). During the courtesy visit, both agencies discussed a framework for developing and implementing a disability-friendly vehicle identification system that will better serve members of the disability community across Lagos.
Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the initiative as an important milestone in advancing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of creating “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”
According to Muri-Okunola, introducing specialised number plates will make it easier to identify vehicles belonging to persons with disabilities, thereby improving accessibility and facilitating smoother movement throughout the state. He noted that the initiative also reflects the principles of inclusive governance by ensuring that the needs of vulnerable groups are considered in public policy.
He further revealed that the agency has already begun consultations with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) regarding the proposed number plates. The MVAA is expected to commence the required administrative procedures while working closely with LASODA to ensure the successful rollout of the programme.
Earlier, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, explained that the meeting was convened to begin discussions on introducing customised number plates that cater specifically to persons with disabilities. She stressed that the programme should extend beyond persons with disabilities alone to include parents of children with disabilities as well as caregivers who provide essential support.
Oyetunde-Lawal said the proposed identification system would improve recognition, accessibility, and overall support for the disability community. She added that the initiative represents another demonstration of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to creating an environment where persons with disabilities are recognised, respected, and empowered to participate fully in every aspect of society.
She also called on government agencies, organisations, and members of the public to embrace inclusion as a collective responsibility, noting that meaningful progress can only be achieved through collaboration and sustained support for policies that promote the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.
Both LASODA and the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency reaffirmed their commitment to driving the initiative forward. The proposal aligns with the provisions of the Lagos State Special People’s Law, which established LASODA to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, eliminate discrimination, and promote equal opportunities across all sectors of society.
