In a move aimed at softening the economic strain caused by rising fuel costs, Seyi Makinde has approved a temporary salary increase for workers across Oyo State. The initiative will see employees receive an additional ₦10,000 monthly for an initial period of three months, beginning in April.
The announcement was made in Ibadan, the state capital, during a public engagement where the governor addressed concerns over the impact of the recent petrol price hike on everyday living. According to Makinde, the intervention is designed as a form of transportation and cost-of-living support, offering immediate relief to thousands of workers grappling with increased expenses.
He emphasized that the top-up would apply uniformly to all state and local government workers, regardless of their position, making it a flat-rate benefit. The governor also hinted at the possibility of extending the payment beyond the initial three months if economic conditions remain challenging.
Beyond government employees, Makinde suggested that efforts are underway to broaden the reach of the support, potentially including individuals outside the state workforce. While details on this aspect are still being worked out, he assured that the process would be handled in a way that ensures fairness and inclusivity.
The governor noted that as his administration approaches its final phase, his priority is to implement policies that not only address immediate needs but also lay the groundwork for continuity and long-term stability. The salary top-up, he said, reflects his commitment to cushioning residents from economic shocks while maintaining a people-centered approach to governance.
This development comes at a time when many Nigerians are adjusting to higher transportation and living costs, making interventions like this crucial in easing financial pressure at the state level.
