Jimmy Kimmel Returns to TV, Claps Back at Trump Critics Without an Apology

In his highly anticipated return to late-night television, Jimmy Kimmel addressed the controversy surrounding his recent remarks after the death of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk—but stopped short of issuing an apology.

Kimmel, who had been briefly suspended by Disney following the backlash, opened his comeback show on Tuesday with a mix of reflection and defiance. “This show is not important. What is important is that we get to live in a country that allows us to have a show like this,” he told his cheering studio audience.

Last week, Kimmel sparked outrage when he linked the suspect in Kirk’s shooting to what he called the “MAGA gang” and mocked Donald Trump’s reaction, comparing it to “how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish.” The comments fueled criticism from Trump supporters and led to his temporary removal from the air.

Returning to the spotlight, Kimmel directly confronted Trump, playing a clip of the president ridiculing his ratings. He argued that the controversy had actually boosted viewership: “He tried his best to cancel me. Instead, he forced millions of people to watch the show. That backfired bigly.”

With sharp wit, Kimmel added, “He might have to release the Epstein files to distract us from this now,” sparking laughter from the audience.

The late-night host closed his monologue by emphasizing the broader implications of political pressure on free speech: “A government threat to silence a comedian the president doesn’t like is anti-American. That’s anti-American.”
