Tinubu Deploys Army Battalion to Kwara After Deadly Terrorist Attack

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the deployment of an army battalion to Kwara State following a brutal terrorist attack that claimed more than 160 lives and left widespread destruction in its wake. The move is aimed at restoring security, protecting vulnerable communities, and preventing further violence in the area.

In a statement issued late Wednesday, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the military deployment is intended to “checkmate the barbaric terrorists and protect defenceless communities.” According to him, the newly deployed troops will lead Operation Savannah Shield, a fresh security effort designed to stabilise the affected areas and pursue those responsible for the attack.

President Tinubu strongly condemned the assault, describing the attackers as heartless for deliberately targeting civilians in what he called a “doomed campaign of terror.” He expressed particular anger over reports that the victims were killed for refusing to accept extremist indoctrination.

The president commended the courage of the community members, noting that despite being Muslims, they rejected attempts by the attackers to recruit them into an ideology that promotes violence rather than peace and dialogue. He offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and reassured them that the government would not allow the crime to go unanswered.

Tinubu also called for close cooperation between federal and state authorities to provide relief and support for survivors, while ensuring that the perpetrators are identified, arrested, and brought to justice.

The attack occurred late Tuesday in Woro Village, Kwara State, where gunmen stormed the community, opening fire indiscriminately. More than 160 people were reportedly killed, shops were set ablaze, and the residence of a traditional ruler was destroyed. Many residents fled into nearby bushes with gunshot wounds as chaos engulfed the village.

Local accounts suggest the violence was triggered by the villagers’ refusal to be indoctrinated by an extremist group known as Mahmuda. Following the rejection, the attackers allegedly used vehicles belonging to the village head to abduct several residents while carrying out mass shootings.

The incident came shortly after the military conducted operations in the area targeting what it described as terrorist elements, raising concerns about possible reprisals against local communities.

With the deployment of additional troops and the launch of Operation Savannah Shield, the federal government says it is determined to restore calm to Kwara State and send a clear message that attacks on innocent Nigerians will not be tolerated.
