Disney Signs Three-Year Deal With OpenAI, Invests $1 Billion to Bring Iconic Characters to Sora AI

The Walt Disney Company has announced a landmark partnership with OpenAI, unveiling a three-year agreement that will integrate hundreds of Disney’s most beloved characters into Sora, OpenAI’s video-generation platform.

As part of the collaboration, Disney is also making a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI, signaling one of the entertainment giant’s biggest technology moves in recent years.

Sora, launched in September, allows users to generate short, high-quality videos using simple text prompts. With this new deal, fans and creators will gain access to more than 200 animated, masked, and creature characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm—along with their costumes, props, vehicles, and other assets.

This includes iconic characters such as Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Simba, Ariel, Baymax, and casts from blockbuster titles like Frozen, Moana, Inside Out, Zootopia, Toy Story, and Encanto. Marvel and Star Wars universes will also be widely represented, offering stylized or animated versions of Black Panther, Iron Man, Captain America, Groot, Deadpool, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Stormtroopers, and more.

Users will be able to generate content with these assets directly in Sora as well as through ChatGPT Images, the visual-creation feature embedded in ChatGPT.

Disney CEO Bob Iger described the collaboration as a pivotal moment for the industry, saying the company aims to “thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI,” while ensuring creators’ rights and works remain protected.

In addition to the character integration, Disney will become a major OpenAI customer, leveraging its APIs to build new creative tools, interactive experiences, and other innovations—potentially including enhancements to Disney+ and other digital platforms.

The partnership marks a major step in blending traditional storytelling with cutting-edge AI technology, opening a new frontier for fans, creators, and the entertainment industry at large.
