Makkah Air Defences on High Alert Amid Rising Regional Threats

Saudi Arabia has heightened security around the holy city of Makkah as regional tensions escalate, with the kingdom’s air-defence systems remaining prepared to respond to any potential aerial threat.

The development comes amid a sharp increase in missile and drone attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen, which have targeted areas across Saudi Arabia in recent days.

On Tuesday, September 15, Saudi authorities issued emergency alerts for Makkah, Jeddah and Taif, warning residents of potential danger. The alerts were subsequently lifted after Saudi Civil Defence announced that the immediate threat had passed.

The warning involving Makkah is particularly significant because the city is home to Islam’s two holiest sites and had not previously been placed under an alert during the latest escalation.

Saudi authorities did not immediately report that any missile or drone had struck Makkah, and there was no confirmed report of damage to the holy city following the alert. The development nevertheless underscores the growing security challenges facing the kingdom as fighting spreads across the region.

The Iran-aligned Houthis have stepped up missile and drone attacks against Saudi territory, including strikes on military and energy-related targets.

Saudi Arabia has also faced a separate attack on its East-West oil pipeline, a major export route linking the kingdom’s oil fields to the Red Sea. The pipeline’s disruption has added further pressure to global energy markets at a time when shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains heavily disrupted.

Saudi authorities have responded with military operations against Houthi positions in Yemen, while Riyadh has sought greater regional and international support as the threat expands.

The latest alerts come as the Houthis advance along Yemen’s Red Sea coast toward the strategically important Bab al-Mandeb Strait, another critical route for global shipping and energy supplies.

The combination of threats around the Red Sea, disruption in the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on Saudi infrastructure has created a rapidly changing security environment across the Middle East. Oil prices have risen above $100 per barrel, reflecting growing concerns over global energy supplies.

For now, Saudi authorities say the immediate danger in Makkah and the other alerted cities has passed. However, with attacks continuing elsewhere in the kingdom, Saudi Arabia’s air-defence forces remain on alert and prepared to respond to any new threat.
