Hunter Biden, son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, is preparing to enter the cryptocurrency market with a new memecoin named $LAPTOP, scheduled to launch on September 9, 2026.
The token takes its name from the highly controversial laptop saga involving Hunter Biden that became a major political and media story during the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
According to reports, $LAPTOP will launch on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Coinbase, with a total supply of 1 billion tokens. Hunter Biden and other founders are expected to control about 30% of the token supply. Those tokens will reportedly be locked for six months and fully vested over two years.
Another 20% of the supply is reportedly earmarked for airdrops, including people who lost money investing in President Donald Trump’s $TRUMP memecoin, as well as some of Hunter Biden’s subscribers and members of a mailing list associated with journalist Andrew Callaghan.
The project also includes an unusual token-burning mechanism. Up to 30% of the supply could be permanently removed from circulation if certain predetermined events occur, including a Democrat winning the 2028 presidential election, Bitcoin reaching a new all-time high, or $LAPTOP surpassing the fully diluted valuation of Trump’s memecoin.
If the specified conditions are not met, the corresponding tokens could instead be donated to charity.
The launch comes as political figures and their families continue to experiment with cryptocurrency. Trump’s $TRUMP memecoin, launched in 2025, generated enormous attention before suffering a major decline, making Hunter Biden’s decision to specifically target some former $TRUMP investors an unusual twist.
However, as with other memecoins, $LAPTOP will be highly speculative. Memecoins can experience extreme price swings and may have little or no underlying utility or intrinsic value. Investors could potentially lose a significant portion or all of their money.
The September 9 launch would mark Hunter Biden’s latest and most unconventional move into the growing intersection of politics, celebrity culture and cryptocurrency.
