Aisha Wahab Makes History as First Afghan American Elected to Congress

California State Senator Aisha Wahab has won the special election for California’s 14th Congressional District, making history as the first Afghan American elected to the U.S. Congress.

Wahab, a Democrat, defeated fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez in the closely watched special election to fill the House seat previously held by former Representative Eric Swalwell. With more than 95% of ballots counted, Wahab had secured about 53% of the vote, compared with roughly 47% for Hernandez.

Her victory gives her the opportunity to serve the remainder of Swalwell’s congressional term, which runs until January 2027. Wahab and Hernandez are expected to face each other again in November in the race for a full two-year term under the district’s new boundaries.

Wahab’s achievement is particularly significant for the Afghan American community. She was already a trailblazer in California politics, having become the first Muslim and first Afghan American elected to the California State Senate in 2022. Her latest victory now takes that historic milestone to the federal level.

Her journey to Congress has also drawn attention because of her personal background. Born in New York to Afghan refugees, Wahab lost her parents at a young age and spent part of her childhood in foster care before being adopted by an Afghan American family in California. She later built a career in public service, first serving on the Hayward City Council before entering the state Senate.

The race attracted considerable outside spending, particularly from groups supporting Hernandez and opposing Wahab. Despite the financial pressure and a late surge in spending, Wahab maintained her lead and secured the congressional seat.

Wahab has positioned herself as a progressive Democrat, with a political agenda focused on issues including healthcare, affordability, workers’ rights and reducing inequality. Her victory also reflects the growing diversity of American political representation, particularly among immigrant communities.

For Afghan Americans, the result represents a major breakthrough. Aisha Wahab is now set to become the first Afghan American member of the U.S. Congress, marking a historic moment for both California and the wider Afghan American community.
