Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the state’s Attorney-General to withdraw the lawsuit filed against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the freezing of the state government’s bank account.
Adeleke disclosed the decision during an interview with Channels Television shortly after he was declared the winner of the August 15 Osun governorship election, saying he was ready to put the dispute behind him following an intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
“I’m putting them behind. What else do I want? I have instructed my Attorney General to drop it. Mr President has done well. He called me. What more do I want?” Adeleke said.
The dispute began after the EFCC restricted the Osun State Government’s statutory allocation account as part of an investigation into alleged financial irregularities. The state government subsequently approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging the action and seeking ₦2 billion in exemplary damages against the anti-graft agency.
The suit, filed on August 5, 2026, came amid heightened political tensions in the state ahead of the governorship election. Adeleke had previously criticised the account restriction, describing it as disruptive to the operations of his administration.
The situation changed after President Tinubu intervened and directed the EFCC to lift the restriction on the state’s accounts. Adeleke said the President’s intervention was enough for him to reconsider the legal battle and focus on moving forward.
The governor also said he had instructed his lawyers to assist some of his aides and officials who had been invited by the EFCC for questioning as part of the investigation.
Adeleke’s decision to withdraw the case signals a de-escalation of the dispute between the Osun State Government and the anti-corruption agency, following the President’s intervention.
The development comes shortly after Adeleke secured another term as Osun State governor, giving him a fresh mandate to continue his administration.
