Laura Overdeck, the estranged wife of billionaire hedge fund manager John Overdeck, has reportedly rejected a proposed divorce settlement worth roughly $723 million to $735 million, arguing that she is entitled to a far larger share of the fortune built during their more than two decades of marriage.
The couple, who married in 2002 without signing a prenuptial agreement, began divorce proceedings in 2022. Laura is now seeking about $6.2 billion, including what her legal team says should be a substantial stake in Two Sigma, the quantitative investment firm John Overdeck co-founded with David Siegel.
Laura’s lawyers argue that she should receive approximately 35% of John’s interest in Two Sigma, along with hundreds of millions of dollars in other assets and a role in the family’s charitable foundation. They contend that much of Overdeck’s wealth was accumulated during the marriage and should therefore be considered in the divorce settlement.
John Overdeck’s legal team strongly disputes the valuation and the basis of Laura’s claim. His lawyers have argued that Two Sigma had substantial value before the couple married and that his interest in the company should not be treated entirely as marital property. They have reportedly put forward a tax-free settlement of about $723 million.
The dispute has become even more complicated because Laura has alleged that billions of dollars in assets were moved into Wyoming trusts before she filed for divorce. She has accused her husband’s estate-planning lawyers and others of helping structure the assets in a way that could limit her access to them following a divorce. Those allegations are being contested.
The absence of a prenup has become a central issue in the case. Laura’s position is that she entered the marriage without an agreement restricting her rights to marital assets, while John’s side maintains that assets connected to his business interests should not simply be divided based on their current value.
The case has attracted considerable attention because of the enormous sums involved and the potential implications for Two Sigma, which manages tens of billions of dollars and is one of the world’s major quantitative investment firms. Forbes currently estimates John Overdeck’s fortune at around $8 billion, although the value of assets at issue in the divorce is a matter of dispute.
Laura has reportedly remained firm in her position as the case heads toward court. Her stance was summed up in a statement attributed to her: “I’m not the woman you can run over, he knows that.”
For now, no final settlement has been reached, meaning the extraordinary gap between the roughly $735 million offer and Laura’s $6.2 billion demand could ultimately be left for a New Jersey court to resolve.
