President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant salary increase for members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, with pay rises ranging from 30 percent to 80 percent depending on rank. The new salary structure is expected to benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel and will take effect from September 1, 2026.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the salary review is designed to improve the welfare of military personnel while recognizing their contributions to national security.
According to the new pay structure, the percentage increase is highest for junior officers and soldiers. Personnel from the rank of private to staff sergeant will receive an 80 percent salary increase, making them the biggest beneficiaries of the adjustment. Those from warrant officer to colonel will receive a 50 percent increase, while senior officers above the rank of colonel—including brigadier generals, major generals, lieutenant generals, and generals—will receive a 30 percent salary increase.
The revised salary package will increase the Federal Government’s annual wage bill for the Armed Forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing an additional ₦264 billion in personnel costs.
President Tinubu said the salary adjustment reflects the government’s appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices made by military personnel in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of service members while continuing efforts to modernize Nigeria’s military. According to him, the government will keep investing in advanced weapons, equipment, and technology to strengthen the Armed Forces’ operational capabilities.
Tinubu also linked the salary increase to his administration’s broader national security agenda, emphasizing that lasting development cannot be achieved without peace and stability.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he stated.
The President further urged members of the Armed Forces to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the nation’s gratitude for their service and commitment to defending Nigeria.
He expressed confidence that, with continued support for the military and other security agencies, the country would overcome the challenges posed by criminal groups and those seeking to undermine national peace and unity.
The approval marks one of the most substantial military salary reviews in recent years and forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen troop welfare, boost morale, and enhance the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security operations.
