Indian-origin politician Nithya Raman has won the Los Angeles mayoral election, defeating incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in a closely watched contest that will see a new leader take charge of America’s second-largest city.
According to reports published on November 6, 2026, Bass conceded the race on Thursday after election results showed Raman securing approximately 52 per cent of the vote against Bass’s 48 per cent.
The Associated Press also projected Raman as the winner, making her the next mayor of Los Angeles. Raman, a 45-year-old urban planner and Los Angeles City Council member, entered the mayoral race shortly before the candidate filing deadline, initially after having supported Bass’s re-election campaign.
Her victory marks a significant political shift in Los Angeles. She becomes the first challenger in more than two decades to defeat an incumbent mayor seeking re-election.
Nithya Raman is an Indian-American politician and urban planner who has represented Los Angeles City Council District 4 since 2020. Before entering politics, she worked in urban planning and community development, focusing on issues including housing, homelessness and city infrastructure.
During her mayoral campaign, Raman focused on making housing more affordable, improving public transportation, addressing homelessness and strengthening neighbourhood infrastructure. She also promised a new approach to tackling homelessness, including expanded medical outreach and housing support.
Raman’s victory comes as Los Angeles prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games, placing additional attention on the city’s housing, transport, infrastructure and public safety challenges.
She is expected to take office next month, succeeding Bass, who has served as mayor since 2022. Her election marks a new chapter in Los Angeles politics, with residents now looking to her administration to deliver on its campaign promises and address some of the city’s longstanding challenges.
