Nigerian Scholar Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi Becomes First Black Woman to Earn PhD in Robotics at the University of Michigan

Nigerian-born scholar Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi has made history by becoming the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Robotics from the University of Michigan, achieving a landmark milestone that highlights excellence, perseverance, and diversity in science and engineering.

Dosunmu-Ogunbi received the historic recognition during the College of Engineering’s convocation ceremony, where she reflected on the journey that led to the achievement and paid tribute to the family, mentors, teachers, and friends who supported her throughout her academic career.

Speaking to fellow graduates, the daughter of Nigerian immigrants emphasized that success is never a solo accomplishment. She noted that every achievement is built on the encouragement, guidance, and sacrifices of others, expressing gratitude to the people who played significant roles in helping her reach the milestone.

Beyond celebrating her academic success, Dosunmu-Ogunbi shared her vision for the future, explaining that she hopes to be remembered not simply for breaking barriers but for using engineering and robotics to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

She described engineering as a profession that extends beyond scientific innovation, stressing that true engineers should combine technical expertise with intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, collaboration, and a commitment to creating solutions that benefit society. According to her, the ultimate purpose of engineering is to improve lives and contribute positively to the world.

The University of Michigan’s Robotics Department praised Dosunmu-Ogunbi’s remarkable academic journey, noting that, like many doctoral students, she began her studies without a clearly defined destination but developed into an accomplished researcher through determination, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose.

Her impact at the university extended well beyond research. Faculty members recognized her as an outstanding mentor and community builder who actively supported fellow students while helping to strengthen diversity and inclusion within the robotics community.

In recognition of her leadership and service, Dosunmu-Ogunbi received the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit Award from the College of Engineering. She also served as a Robotics Outreach Ambassador for three consecutive years, from 2021 to 2023, inspiring young students and promoting greater interest in robotics and engineering.

Her list of accomplishments also includes finishing as a runner-up in the College of Engineering’s Three-Minute Thesis Competition, where doctoral candidates present complex research in a concise and accessible format. In addition, she was inducted into the Bouchet Society, an honor that recognizes exceptional scholarly achievement while advancing diversity and excellence in graduate education.

As she prepares for the next chapter of her career, the university disclosed that Dosunmu-Ogunbi is currently interviewing for faculty positions, with the goal of continuing her research, teaching, and mentorship in higher education.

Her achievement represents not only a personal milestone but also an inspiring moment for Nigeria, the global Black community, and aspiring scientists worldwide. By breaking new ground in the field of robotics, Dosunmu-Ogunbi has demonstrated that dedication, resilience, and a commitment to service can open doors to historic accomplishments while inspiring future generations to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
