President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the sum of ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, marking another major investment in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the commissioning of the newly remodeled and upgraded Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the airport in Kano.
According to the minister, the Federal Government considers Kano a strategic aviation and commercial hub, making the airport a priority for extensive infrastructure upgrades under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He explained that the reconstruction of the second runway is expected to improve operational efficiency, strengthen safety standards, and position the airport to compete with leading international airports across the world.
Keyamo noted that the administration is committed to transforming Nigeria’s aviation industry through sustained investment in modern airport facilities. He added that the runway project is one of several interventions aimed at improving passenger experience and supporting the long-term growth of air transportation in the country.
The minister also acknowledged the appointment of former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), describing the decision as part of the government’s broader vision to accelerate aviation development in the state.
Beyond the runway reconstruction, Keyamo revealed that work has already commenced on upgrading the airport’s Hajj Terminal, with contractors currently on site. The project forms part of a wider modernization programme designed to enhance airport operations, improve passenger comfort, and strengthen service delivery across Nigeria’s airports.
He described Kano as the commercial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria, emphasizing that its economic importance makes continuous investment in aviation infrastructure essential for supporting trade, tourism, and regional connectivity.
The commissioning ceremony also celebrated the completion of the remodeled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal, named in honour of the late aviation pioneer Mallam Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo in recognition of his contributions to the development of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, said the upgraded terminal reflects the authority’s commitment to providing world-class airport facilities and delivering a better travel experience for passengers.
Ganduje also commended President Tinubu and the Ministry of Aviation for prioritizing aviation infrastructure in Kano, expressing confidence that the ongoing projects would further strengthen the state’s position as Northern Nigeria’s leading commercial and aviation gateway.
The reconstruction of the airport’s second runway, alongside the terminal upgrades and ongoing Hajj Terminal project, represents a significant step in the Federal Government’s efforts to modernize Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure. Once completed, the projects are expected to improve safety, boost airport capacity, and support economic growth by enhancing domestic and international air travel through Kano.
