Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has made another bold prediction about the future, saying that money could lose much of its importance by 2036 as artificial intelligence and robotics become capable of producing more goods and services than humanity can consume.
Speaking in an interview with The Economist, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO argued that rapid advancements in AI and automation could fundamentally reshape the global economy, creating a future where traditional economic models no longer apply.
According to Musk, the increasing capabilities of artificial intelligence and autonomous robots could eventually eliminate scarcity in many industries, making money far less relevant than it is today.
He questioned the need for money in a world where intelligent machines can provide an abundance of goods and services, suggesting that technological progress may reach a point where basic economic constraints are dramatically reduced.
Addressing concerns about widespread job losses caused by AI, Musk expressed optimism that society could transition to what he described as “universal high income.” Rather than focusing on employment as the primary source of financial security, he believes future economic systems could ensure people maintain a high standard of living even as machines perform a growing share of human work.
Musk also shared his views on the global race for artificial intelligence, noting that China remains a formidable competitor despite current computing limitations. He said Chinese technology companies have continued to make significant progress and could emerge as leaders in AI development once they gain access to greater computing power.
Beyond technology, Musk reflected on his recent involvement in American politics, admitting that he became more politically engaged than he originally intended.
He acknowledged that he had “got a little too involved in politics” and said he “got carried away” during the political events surrounding the 2024 United States presidential election, which resulted in the re-election of President Donald Trump.
Following the election, Musk was appointed as a senior adviser and co-head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative created to improve government spending and reduce waste. The department concluded its operations on July 4, 2026.
Reflecting on his time in the role, Musk said the objective of the department was to ensure public funds were used responsibly and to eliminate fraudulent or wasteful government spending. He acknowledged that his participation attracted significant criticism but maintained that the initiative was aimed at promoting greater efficiency and accountability.
Musk’s latest comments add to a long list of predictions he has made about artificial intelligence and its impact on society. While experts remain divided on how quickly AI will reshape the global economy, his remarks continue to fuel debate over the future of work, wealth distribution, and the role of technology in everyday life.
As AI capabilities continue to advance at an unprecedented pace, discussions about automation, universal income, and the future relevance of money are increasingly moving from theoretical conversations to serious policy and economic debates around the world.
