Popular Nigerian social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been honoured with the traditional chieftaincy title of Atayese of Yorubaland by the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, Telu I.
The title was conferred during a ceremony held on Wednesday at the monarch’s palace in Iwo, Osun State, where the activist was officially recognised for his influence and contributions to social advocacy.
VeryDarkMan travelled to the ancient town following a personal invitation from the Oluwo. He arrived via Ibadan Airport alongside coordinators of the Ratel Movement from Nigeria’s South-West region, receiving a warm welcome before proceeding to the royal palace for the investiture.
During the ceremony, the monarch dressed the activist in traditional Aso Oke attire, symbolizing his acceptance into the Yoruba traditional institution before formally presenting him with the title of Atayese of Yorubaland.
The event attracted palace chiefs, traditional leaders, members of the Ratel Movement, and other invited guests who gathered to witness the colourful cultural ceremony.
Speaking at the event, the Oluwo of Iwoland described Iwo as a peaceful and accommodating community that embraces people regardless of their background. He reaffirmed the town’s reputation for hospitality and welcomed members of the Ratel Movement, assuring them that anyone choosing to settle in Iwo would be treated like a member of his own family.
The monarch also expressed his admiration for the Ratel Movement, humorously describing himself as the “King of the Ratels” while pledging his support for the group’s efforts to promote positive social change.
Addressing VeryDarkMan and his supporters, Oba Akanbi encouraged the movement to continue advocating for accountability and societal reforms. However, he emphasized that activism alone may not be enough to achieve lasting change, urging members to consider participating actively in politics.
According to the monarch, political leadership provides the platform needed to implement meaningful reforms, influence public policy, and strengthen institutions capable of addressing the country’s social challenges.
He further encouraged the movement to use its growing influence to promote positive cultural values, combat societal decay, and contribute to nation-building through constructive engagement.
The conferment of the Atayese of Yorubaland title marks another significant moment in VeryDarkMan’s public profile. Known for his outspoken commentary on governance, social justice, and public accountability, the activist has built a large following across social media platforms, where he frequently addresses issues affecting Nigerians.
The traditional honour reflects growing recognition of his impact beyond the digital space and highlights the increasing interaction between influential public figures, youth-driven movements, and traditional institutions in contemporary Nigeria.
