2026 FIFA World Cup Sets New Attendance Record With Over 3.6 Million Fans

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially become the most-attended tournament in the competition’s history, with more than 3.6 million spectators passing through stadium gates before the knockout stage has even begun.

The historic milestone was reached during Thursday’s Group E clash between Ecuador and Germany at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The match attracted 80,663 fans, pushing the tournament’s cumulative attendance to 3,605,357, according to FIFA.

The achievement surpasses the previous World Cup attendance record of 3,587,538, which was set during the 1994 FIFA World Cup—also hosted in the United States. Unlike the 1994 edition, however, the 2026 tournament still has several rounds remaining, meaning the record is expected to rise significantly before the competition concludes.

FIFA also reported that the tournament has recorded an impressive 99.7% stadium occupancy rate, highlighting the overwhelming demand for tickets and the global enthusiasm surrounding football’s biggest event.

Thursday proved to be another landmark day for the tournament as fans packed stadiums across the United States. Matches played in Philadelphia, Kansas City, Arlington, Santa Clara, and Inglewood attracted a combined 384,206 spectators, setting a new single-day attendance record in FIFA World Cup history.

Several factors have contributed to the unprecedented turnout. The 2026 tournament features an expanded 48-team format, increasing the number of participating nations and the total number of matches. So far, 56 games have already been played, compared to the entire 52-match schedule of the 1994 tournament, which featured only 24 teams.

The World Cup expanded to 32 teams in 1998, resulting in 64 matches, but the current edition’s larger format has created even more opportunities for fans to attend games and support their national teams.

Another key reason behind the record-breaking attendance is the use of some of North America’s largest sporting venues. Many of the stadiums hosting matches in the United States have significantly higher seating capacities than those used during previous FIFA World Cups, allowing more supporters to experience the tournament in person.

With the knockout rounds still ahead, the attendance record is expected to continue climbing, potentially establishing a benchmark that could stand for decades. The combination of expanded participation, world-class stadiums, and overwhelming fan interest has already made the 2026 FIFA World Cup one of the most memorable editions in the tournament’s history.

As the race for football’s biggest prize intensifies, the tournament is not only delivering thrilling action on the pitch but also rewriting the record books for fan engagement, reaffirming the FIFA World Cup’s status as the world’s most celebrated sporting event.
