S&P 500 Surges Past 7,800 for the First Time as US Stocks Add Over $700 Billion

US stocks have reached another major milestone, with the S&P 500 climbing above 7,800 for the first time as strong technology shares and improving investor sentiment continue to push Wall Street higher.

The benchmark index rose sharply on Thursday, August 13, reaching a new record and accelerating its recent run. The S&P 500 was up about 0.9 per cent at 7,815 during trading, just seven days after it first moved above the 7,700 level.

The latest rally has added more than $700 billion in market value to US equities, underscoring the scale of the gains across American stocks.

Technology companies have been among the biggest contributors to the advance. Shares of major companies including Microsoft, Nvidia and Apple moved higher, helping lift both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite. The S&P 500 technology sector gained about 1 per cent during Thursday’s session.

Investors also received a boost from fresh inflation data. US producer prices rose 4.7 per cent in July, below the 4.9 per cent increase economists had expected. The softer reading, combined with relatively benign consumer inflation data released earlier, has strengthened expectations that the Federal Reserve may leave interest rates unchanged at its next meeting.

Falling oil prices have also supported market sentiment. Brent crude dropped about 2.2 per cent on Thursday after six consecutive sessions of gains, easing some concerns about inflation and the potential impact of higher energy costs on the broader economy.

The speed of the latest rally has also caught attention. The S&P 500 took 43 trading sessions to move from 7,600 to 7,700, but needed only seven sessions to cross the next 100-point milestone.

Investors are increasingly watching whether strong corporate earnings and continued enthusiasm around artificial intelligence can sustain the rally. JPMorgan recently raised its year-end 2026 target for the S&P 500 to 8,000, citing stronger earnings expectations and continued investment in AI-related technologies.

The latest record nevertheless comes with questions about valuation and how long the momentum can continue. Higher interest rates, geopolitical tensions and elevated stock valuations remain potential risks for investors.

For now, Wall Street remains firmly in record territory. With the S&P 500 breaking through 7,800 and the value of US equities continuing to climb, investors are turning their attention to whether the market can maintain its momentum and reach the next major milestone.
