Nigeria’s national football team head coach, Eric Chelle, is set to continue his journey with the Super Eagles after reaching an agreement on a new contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC).
The development was confirmed by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, following a strategic meeting between officials of the NSC and the NFF in Abuja. The meeting focused on the future direction of Nigeria’s national football teams and long-term development plans.
Chelle, who was initially appointed on a two-year deal scheduled to expire at the end of 2026, has been engaged in contract discussions with football authorities in recent months. The negotiations have now concluded successfully, paving the way for the Franco-Malian tactician to remain at the helm of the Super Eagles.
The new agreement reportedly includes improved financial terms as well as additional provisions for his coaching staff. Dikko disclosed that both parties had reached a mutual understanding on remuneration and other performance-related benchmarks designed to support the team’s continued progress.
The contract extension comes after Chelle guided Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, a result that strengthened confidence in his leadership and vision for the national team.
In a significant expansion of his responsibilities, Chelle has also been appointed head coach of Nigeria’s U-23 national team, popularly known as the Olympic Eagles. The decision is part of a broader strategy aimed at creating a seamless pathway for young talents to transition into the senior national team.
According to Dikko, many of the players currently emerging within the U-23 age category are expected to become integral members of the Super Eagles in the coming years. By placing both teams under the same technical leadership, football authorities hope to ensure continuity in playing style, player development, and long-term planning.
The appointment signals Nigeria’s intention to begin preparations early for the men’s football competition at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Football administrators believe Chelle’s dual role will help strengthen the country’s talent pipeline and improve coordination between age-grade and senior national teams.
While the expanded role reflects growing confidence in the coach, it also presents a major challenge. The Olympic Eagles have failed to qualify for the last two Olympic football tournaments, missing out on both Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. Chelle will now be tasked with reversing that trend while continuing to build a competitive Super Eagles squad.
With a renewed contract, enhanced support, and greater responsibilities, Eric Chelle now stands at the center of Nigeria’s football future as the country seeks success on both continental and global stages.
