Kylian Mbappé Surpasses Lionel Messi and Pelé in FIFA World Cup Goals as France Defeat Senegal

France superstar Kylian Mbappé etched his name deeper into football history after surpassing two of the sport’s greatest icons, Lionel Messi and Pelé, in the FIFA World Cup goalscoring rankings. The Real Madrid forward achieved the milestone during France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal in their opening Group I match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Mbappé delivered a match-winning performance, scoring twice to help Les Bleus begin their quest for a third World Cup title on a winning note. His brace took his World Cup tally to 14 goals, moving him ahead of Argentina legend Lionel Messi, who scored 13 goals across five World Cup tournaments, and Brazilian icon Pelé, who finished his World Cup career with 12 goals.

After a tightly contested first half, Mbappé broke the deadlock in the 66th minute. The French captain timed his run perfectly before converting a precise pass from Michael Olise, giving France the breakthrough they desperately needed.

France doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute through substitute Bradley Barcola, who finished calmly to put the European giants in control. Senegal responded late in the game when Ibrahim Mbaye reduced the deficit during stoppage time, briefly raising hopes of a dramatic comeback.

However, Mbappé ensured there would be no late twist. Deep into added time, the 27-year-old unleashed a stunning long-range strike to seal a 3-1 victory and complete his brace in style.

Beyond setting a new World Cup record ahead of Messi and Pelé, Mbappé also reached another remarkable milestone by becoming France’s all-time leading goalscorer with 58 international goals.

The achievement further strengthens Mbappé’s legacy as one of the greatest players of his generation. Having already won a World Cup and played a key role in multiple major tournaments for France, the forward continues to rewrite football history at an extraordinary pace.

With the tournament still in its early stages, Mbappé now has the opportunity to extend his World Cup goals tally even further as France aim to add another global title to their illustrious history.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup unfolds, the French captain’s record-breaking performance serves as another reminder that football is witnessing one of the game’s most remarkable careers in real time.
