FIFA has reportedly confirmed that Somali referee Omar Artan will receive his full World Cup remuneration despite being unable to officiate at the tournament after being denied entry into the United States.
The decision comes as a significant gesture of support for the highly respected match official, whose dream of participating in football’s biggest event was abruptly cut short following immigration complications upon his arrival in the United States.
Artan, 34, had travelled to Florida in anticipation of taking charge of matches at the World Cup, a milestone that would have marked one of the greatest achievements of his refereeing career. However, his journey took an unexpected turn when he was detained for several hours by immigration officials at Miami International Airport before ultimately being refused entry and deported.
Despite the setback, FIFA has moved to ensure that the Somali official does not suffer financially because of circumstances beyond his control. According to reports, football’s world governing body will pay Artan his full tournament salary even though he will not be able to officiate any matches during the competition.

Reports indicate that US authorities questioned Artan over alleged associations with individuals suspected of links to terrorist organizations. During an extensive interrogation process, he was reportedly asked about possible connections to the militant group Al Shabab. The referee has strongly denied any such links, maintaining that he possessed all the required travel documents, including a valid visa, and had travelled solely to fulfill his duties at the World Cup.
