Abducted Oyo Students and Teachers Still Held in Old Oyo National Park, Says Governor Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has provided a fresh update on the ongoing efforts to rescue the students and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area, revealing that intelligence reports indicate the victims are still being held within the expansive Old Oyo National Park.

The governor shared the update in his latest newsletter, assuring residents that security agencies remain fully committed to securing the safe release of the abductees despite the challenges involved in the operation.

The kidnapping, which occurred on May 15, 2026, sent shockwaves across Oyo State after suspected bandits launched coordinated attacks on several schools, including Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Esinle. Scores of students and teachers were reportedly taken during the attacks, leaving families and communities devastated and anxiously awaiting their return.

According to Makinde, it has been nearly a month since the victims were abducted, and while the prolonged wait has heightened concerns among relatives and residents, security operatives continue to pursue every available lead. The governor acknowledged the emotional toll the situation has taken on affected families, noting that words of reassurance may offer little comfort as the days continue to pass without the victims returning home.

Despite the difficulties, Makinde emphasized that the state government has not relaxed its efforts. He stated that security agencies are actively working around the clock, utilizing intelligence gathering, strategic planning, and coordinated operations to ensure the abductees are rescued safely.

The governor explained that intelligence reports suggest the victims remain within the Old Oyo National Park corridor, a vast and rugged area spanning approximately 2,500 square kilometres and stretching across parts of ten local government areas in Oyo State. The size of the park and its difficult terrain have created significant operational challenges for security personnel conducting search and rescue missions.

Makinde stressed that these geographical obstacles require patience, precision, and careful coordination to avoid jeopardizing the safety of the victims. He reiterated that authorities are committed to pursuing lawful and effective measures aimed at bringing the abducted students and teachers home safely.

The governor also called on residents to remain vigilant and support ongoing security efforts by reporting suspicious activities through the state’s toll-free Citizens Enquiry Number, 615. He assured citizens that all credible information provided to authorities would be treated with urgency and professionalism.

In addition, Makinde warned against the spread of unverified reports and misinformation surrounding the abduction, noting that false information could undermine rescue operations and complicate the work of security agencies on the ground.

As the search continues, the governor appealed to residents to remain hopeful and continue offering support to security personnel through useful information and community cooperation. He also encouraged Nigerians to keep the abducted students and teachers in their thoughts and prayers while efforts intensify to secure their safe return.

The latest update underscores the complexity of the rescue operation while reaffirming the government’s determination to bring the victims back to their families. For many in Oyo State, the hope remains that ongoing security efforts will soon result in a successful rescue and an end to the uncertainty that has gripped the affected communities for weeks.
