Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced plans to construct a modern FIFA-standard stadium in Aba, with a proposed seating capacity of about 35,000, in what is expected to become one of the state’s most ambitious sports infrastructure projects in recent years.
The proposed facility is designed to meet international football requirements, positioning Aba as a potential host for top-flight domestic matches, continental tournaments, and other major sporting events.
According to the plan, the stadium will feature a world-class playing pitch, upgraded spectator stands, modern floodlighting systems for night games, VIP lounges, media and broadcast centres, player locker rooms, and advanced safety and security installations aligned with global standards.
Beyond the main arena, the project is also expected to include training pitches, expanded parking areas, and auxiliary buildings that will support its use as a full-scale sports complex capable of hosting multiple activities.
Governor Otti’s vision for the project goes beyond sports development. The stadium is also positioned as part of a wider economic transformation strategy for Aba, a city widely recognized as one of Nigeria’s leading commercial centres in the south-east.
The project is expected to stimulate local economic activity by increasing demand for hospitality services, transportation, food vending, and other small business opportunities, particularly during match days and major events.
It is also expected to strengthen football development in the region, providing a modern home ground for local clubs, including Enyimba FC, one of Nigeria’s most decorated football teams.
Once completed, the stadium is projected to raise Abia State’s profile within Nigerian and African football circles while also promoting youth engagement, talent discovery, and sports tourism.
Although the project is still in the planning and development stage, it is expected to be executed through a structured approach that may involve partnerships to ensure quality delivery and adherence to international standards.
The Aba stadium project reflects the state government’s broader push to combine infrastructure development with economic growth, using sports as a catalyst for long-term investment, job creation, and urban renewal in Abia State.
