President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), marking a major leadership transition for Nigeria’s tertiary admission system.
Prof. Aina, a computer engineering scholar at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, will officially take over from the current Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, whose second term is expected to end on July 31, 2026.
According to a statement by the Presidency, the appointment reflects the government’s confidence in Aina’s expertise in technology-driven education systems and institutional reform.
The announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who described Aina as a distinguished academic with strong experience in digital infrastructure, examination systems, and public sector transformation.
At just 39 years old, Aina is set to become the youngest Registrar in the history of JAMB, a milestone that has drawn attention within Nigeria’s education and technology sectors.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom. He has also completed advanced management training at the Lagos Business School.
Aina’s career is closely tied to Nigeria’s examination and admissions system. He began his professional journey with JAMB during his National Youth Service year, where he gained early experience in data-driven admission processes and national examination management.
Over the years, he has built over 15 years of experience working at the intersection of technology, education policy, and institutional reform. He has also served as a consultant to key examination bodies, including the National Examinations Council (NECO), the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), and several state education ministries.
His work has focused largely on improving examination integrity, digital transformation, and system optimization across Nigeria’s education sector.
Aina is also a member of several professional organizations, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
President Tinubu expressed confidence that the incoming JAMB Registrar will bring innovation, technical expertise, and administrative experience to strengthen the operations of the examination body and improve efficiency in Nigeria’s admission processes.
The transition is expected to begin ahead of Ishaq Oloyede’s exit in 2026, ensuring continuity in the management of one of Nigeria’s most important education agencies.
With his appointment, attention is now on how Prof. Aina’s technology-focused background will shape the future of JAMB, particularly in areas such as digital examinations, data management, and admission transparency.
