Nigerian Navy Cracks Down on Oil Theft, Seizes Products Worth $300 Million in Major Q1 Operations

The Nigerian Navy has recorded a significant breakthrough in the fight against crude oil theft, intercepting vessels and recovering illegally refined petroleum products valued at approximately $300 million in the first quarter of 2026.

The operation, carried out under the newly launched Operation DELTA SENTINEL, saw the recovery of over 531,500 litres of stolen petroleum products between January and March. During the same period, 18 suspects linked to oil theft and other maritime crimes were arrested across key operational zones in the Niger Delta.

According to Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, the figures highlight a sustained and coordinated effort to disrupt illegal oil activities. February recorded the highest recovery with 360,700 litres, followed by 118,800 litres in January and 52,000 litres in March—an indication that intensified operations are steadily putting pressure on criminal networks.

Among the notable successes were the seizure of 45,000 litres of stolen products in Rivers State in late January, the interception of an 18-tonne barge in February, and the discovery of a massive 96,000-litre illegal wellhead in Bayelsa State. Additional recoveries included tens of thousands of litres of crude oil and refined products across multiple locations in March.

The Navy’s operations were particularly active in hotspots such as Warri South-West, Oteghele Creek, Ogbe-Ijoh, Alakiri River, and the Ogbia/Egbema/Ndoni axis. In one instance, about 45,000 litres of crude oil were recovered at Alakiri River, while another operation at Ogbologo led to the interception of 44,000 litres of automotive gas oil and the arrest of eight suspects.

Beyond seizures, the Navy also targeted the infrastructure enabling these illegal activities. At least 12 illegal refinery sites, four storage facilities, three vessels, and two pipeline connections were dismantled during the quarter. These actions are part of a broader strategy to weaken the operational base of oil theft syndicates.

Operation DELTA SENTINEL, launched on January 13, 2026, replaced the earlier Operation DELTA SANITY II. The new initiative incorporates enhanced surveillance, improved intelligence sharing, and a structured review system designed to ensure sustained impact over its one-year mandate.

Naval authorities say the gradual drop in the estimated market value of recovered products suggests that ongoing operations are disrupting the profitability of illegal oil activities. The service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s maritime environment and critical economic assets.

Under the leadership of Idi Abbas, the Nigerian Navy says it will continue to intensify intelligence-driven missions and strengthen collaboration with other security agencies to further dismantle oil theft networks and support the country’s economic stability.
