North Korea Launches Suspected Ballistic Missile Into Sea Amid US–South Korea Military Drills

North Korea has launched a projectile toward the sea off its eastern coast, according to officials in South Korea and Japan, raising fresh concerns about regional security.

South Korea’s military confirmed that the projectile was fired on Saturday but provided few details about the launch. The object was reportedly directed toward waters east of the Korean Peninsula, an area commonly used by Pyongyang during weapons tests.

Authorities in Japan also tracked the launch. The Japan Coast Guard stated that the projectile appeared to have landed in the sea. According to reports from NHK, defense ministry sources indicated that the object likely fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

Japanese officials suggested the projectile may have been a ballistic missile, although further analysis would be required to confirm the exact nature of the weapon.

The launch comes amid heightened military activity in the region. Just five days earlier, the United States and South Korea began large-scale joint military exercises designed to strengthen readiness against potential threats from the North.

Washington and Seoul maintain that the drills are defensive in nature and intended to improve coordination between allied forces. However, Pyongyang has repeatedly criticized such exercises, describing them as preparations for possible military aggression against the country.

The timing of the launch also coincides with diplomatic discussions aimed at restarting stalled dialogue with North Korea. Earlier in the week, South Korea’s prime minister met with Donald Trump in Washington to explore potential ways of reviving negotiations with Pyongyang.

Talks between North Korea and the United States have largely been frozen since 2019, leaving diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula at a standstill.

Security analysts say missile launches by North Korea often occur during periods of military exercises by the United States and its allies, reflecting the long-running cycle of tension and response that has defined relations in the region for years.
