Drone Strike Hits Helipad Inside U.S. Embassy Compound in Baghdad

A drone strike has hit the compound of the United States Embassy in Baghdad, damaging a helipad within the facility and sending smoke rising above the heavily secured area of the Iraqi capital.

According to reports from Associated Press, the attack occurred early Saturday when a projectile landed inside the embassy compound. Two Iraqi security officials confirmed that the missile struck a helipad located within the diplomatic complex.

The embassy sits inside Baghdad’s highly fortified Green Zone, an area that houses major Iraqi government buildings as well as several foreign diplomatic missions. Because of the district’s tight security, any breach typically raises immediate concerns among Iraqi and international security officials.

Witnesses reported seeing a column of smoke rising from the embassy compound following the strike. Initial information from an Iraqi security source suggested that part of the facility’s air defence system may have been damaged during the attack, although details about the extent of the damage remain unclear.

Officials who spoke to reporters did so on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the incident publicly.

At the time of reporting, the United States Department of State had not issued an official statement regarding the strike, and there was no immediate confirmation of casualties or injuries.

Security analysts note that the Green Zone is designed to withstand such threats, with multiple layers of security and defence systems protecting diplomatic compounds and government institutions.

The incident highlights the continuing security challenges in Iraq, where foreign diplomatic missions and military installations have occasionally been targeted by rockets, drones, or other projectiles amid regional tensions.

Investigations are expected to determine the origin of the drone and whether it was launched by a militia group operating in or around Baghdad. Authorities are also likely to review security protocols within the Green Zone as part of the response to the attack.
