FAAN and MTN Nigeria Launch Free High-Speed Wi-Fi at Lagos and Abuja International Airports

Air travelers passing through Nigeria’s busiest international gateways can now enjoy free high-speed internet, following a new partnership between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and MTN Nigeria.

The service, officially launched on Thursday, is now live at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 2 in Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The initiative is aimed at improving passenger experience while strengthening digital infrastructure across the country’s aviation sector.

Speaking at the launch event in Lagos, FAAN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, Olubunmi Kuku — represented by the Director of Airport Operations, Abdullahi Mahmood — described the rollout as part of broader efforts to modernise Nigeria’s airports and align them with global standards.

According to FAAN, the free Wi-Fi service will be extended to the MMIA temporary terminal and other international airports nationwide within the next three months.

For many travelers, this move comes as welcome relief. Complaints about slow or unreliable internet access at Nigerian airports have been common, especially during peak travel seasons when connectivity becomes critical for flight updates, work communication, and personal use.

MTN Nigeria’s Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Lynda Saint-Nwafor, who represented CEO Karl Toriola at the event, assured passengers that the telecom giant is committed to delivering a reliable and secure connection. The company emphasized that network stability and data protection would remain top priorities as usage grows.

While FAAN hailed the project as a significant milestone in airport service delivery, specific details regarding the funding structure and long-term maintenance plan were not disclosed during the launch. It also remains unclear whether the free Wi-Fi will have time limits per user or bandwidth caps.

The introduction of complimentary high-speed internet reflects a growing push toward smarter, digitally enabled travel hubs across Africa. As Nigeria continues to position itself as a key aviation gateway on the continent, investments in connectivity and passenger convenience are likely to play a central role in shaping the future airport experience.
