Nnamdi Kanu Honoured With Honorary Georgia Citizenship Despite Detention in Nigeria

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been granted Honorary Citizenship of the State of Georgia, United States, in a rare international recognition that has sparked widespread attention and debate.

The honour, which also designates Kanu as an “Outstanding Citizen” and Goodwill Ambassador of Georgia, was formally proclaimed by Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, acting on behalf of the Republican-controlled U.S. state.

The proclamation letter is dated January 16, 2026, while the presentation ceremony took place on Friday, January 23, 2026, in Milledgeville, one of Georgia’s historic capital cities.

The certificate was presented by State Representative Gab Okoye. Because Kanu remains in detention in Nigeria, the honour was received on his behalf by Ambassador Uche Ajulu-Okeke, a former Consul General of Nigeria to South Africa. In her remarks, Ajulu-Okeke described Kanu as “Africa’s most famous political prisoner and a global prisoner of conscience,” acknowledging the symbolic weight of the recognition.

In the proclamation, Raffensperger declared Kanu an Honorary Citizen of Georgia and stated that he should be accorded all courtesies befitting a Goodwill Ambassador of the state, whether traveling within the United States or beyond its borders. The document concludes with an official seal from the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta, underscoring its formal status.

The development comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding Kanu’s incarceration. The IPOB leader is currently serving a life sentence at a correctional facility in Sokoto, following his conviction by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja. His case has continued to attract international scrutiny, particularly from human rights advocates and members of the Nigerian diaspora.

While the Georgia proclamation does not carry legal authority over Nigeria’s judicial process, supporters view it as a powerful symbolic gesture that elevates Kanu’s profile on the global stage. Critics, however, argue that such recognitions risk complicating diplomatic and legal realities.
