Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has directed the immediate employment of children of deceased military personnel in the state, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting the Armed Forces and the families of those who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.
The governor made the announcement on Thursday during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The event formed part of nationwide activities honouring fallen heroes of the Nigerian military and other security agencies.
Governor Fubara said the decision was a practical step to provide socio-economic relief to families left behind by servicemen who lost their lives in the line of duty. He stressed that the state government would not only remember fallen heroes in words, but also through concrete actions that directly improve the lives of their dependants.
According to him, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Benibo Anabraba, has been given clear instructions to ensure that the employment directive is implemented without delay. The governor described the move as part of the state’s broader welfare support for veterans and their families.
Fubara also reiterated Rivers State’s continued collaboration with military and security formations operating within the state. He said the government remains committed to providing logistical and welfare support aimed at strengthening their operational effectiveness and boosting morale.
While paying tribute to serving and fallen troops, the governor acknowledged the sacrifices of soldiers deployed across different parts of the country. He highlighted ongoing military operations against Boko Haram and other insurgent groups in the North-East, as well as efforts to tackle banditry and kidnapping in the North-West and North-Central regions.
He also referenced security operations in the South-East and South-South, including the fight against pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft and other land and maritime security threats, noting that these efforts are critical to national stability and economic survival.
Governor Fubara honoured soldiers who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, international peacekeeping missions and recent counter-insurgency operations. He praised their courage and selflessness, describing them as the foundation of Nigeria’s sovereignty and unity.
The governor further commended President Bola Tinubu for ongoing efforts to strengthen the Nigerian military through improved welfare packages, modern equipment and renewed focus on addressing internal security challenges.
He concluded by assuring military families and serving personnel that Rivers State will continue to stand with them, not only in remembrance ceremonies, but through sustained policies that recognise their sacrifices and secure their future.
