Captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro Faces US Charges

Captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is reportedly being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he is expected to face serious drug trafficking and weapons-related charges in the United States. The development has sent shockwaves through Venezuela and the international community, marking a dramatic turn in the country’s long-running political crisis.

Speaking on the situation, US President Donald Trump said the United States would temporarily “run the country” until what he described as a “judicious transition” of power takes place. He also stated that the US intends to take control of Venezuela’s vast oil reserves, a move likely to intensify global debate over sovereignty, international law, and energy politics.

In Caracas, Venezuela’s Supreme Court reacted swiftly by directing Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to assume the powers and responsibilities of acting president. The court’s decision is aimed at maintaining constitutional order, though it has further deepened divisions within the country’s political landscape.

At the same time, opposition leader María Corina Machado rejected the Supreme Court’s move, calling instead for power to be transferred to an opposition-backed candidate. She argued that Maduro’s capture represents a decisive break from the past and an opportunity for democratic renewal in Venezuela.

Across Venezuela and among the Venezuelan diaspora worldwide, reactions have been mixed. Many citizens have expressed joy and renewed hope that years of political and economic hardship may finally give way to meaningful change. Others, however, remain anxious about the future, uncertain about the implications of foreign involvement, leadership disputes, and the stability of state institutions.

As events continue to unfold, Venezuela stands at a critical crossroads, with its political future, control of its oil wealth, and national sovereignty hanging in the balance.
