Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Musa Calls for Border Fencing, Assures Nigerians of Rapid Security Improvements

Nigeria’s newly sworn-in Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has sparked national discussion after urging the country to consider fencing its borders as part of broader efforts to tackle insecurity.

Drawing comparisons with other nations, Musa highlighted how Pakistan secured peace by fencing 1,350km of its border with Afghanistan, while Saudi Arabia and Iraq also fully fenced their 1,400km boundary.

He noted that Nigeria shares 1,500km of border with Niger Republic, 1,900km with Cameroon, in addition to borders with Chad — vast stretches that have historically been difficult to monitor. According to him, exploring structured border fencing could significantly strengthen national security and curb cross-border threats.

General Musa also reassured Nigerians that meaningful improvements in security will be noticeable “within the shortest possible time.” He pledged to rebuild synergy across the armed forces, deepen collaboration with other security agencies, and mobilize citizens to actively support the collective fight against insecurity.

With his firm stance and renewed strategic direction, the Defence Minister signaled a more coordinated, proactive, and people-centered approach to restoring peace across the country.
