Marco Rubio Congratulates Nigeria on 66th Independence Anniversary

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has congratulated Nigeria on its 66th Independence Anniversary, highlighting the country’s importance to Africa’s stability, economic growth and regional affairs.

In a National Day message released by the U.S. Department of State on October 1, 2026, Rubio extended congratulations to the Nigerian people and said Washington values its longstanding relationship with Abuja.

“On behalf of the United States of America, I extend my congratulations to the people of Nigeria on the 66th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence,” Rubio said. Rubio described Nigeria as Africa’s largest democracy and one of the continent’s largest economies. He said the country plays a vital role in advancing regional stability and economic growth.

“The United States is proud to stand alongside Nigeria in pursuit of these common goals,” he said. The Secretary of State also pointed to the substantive dialogue between the two countries over the past year, while reaffirming Washington’s interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation.

According to the statement, areas of shared interest include democratic principles, religious freedom, expanding commercial relations, peace and security. Rubio concluded his message by wishing Nigeria and its people peace, unity, prosperity and hope for generations to come.

Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, making 2026 the country’s 66th year as an independent nation.
