Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Dies at 76

Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the younger brother of Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has died at the age of 76. The Dubai Ruler’s Court announced his death on Monday, September 21, 2026, and declared an official 10-day mourning period across the emirate, beginning the same day. Flags will be flown at half-mast throughout the mourning period.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, paid tribute to his late brother, asking Allah to have mercy on him and saying he would remain in the family’s prayers and hearts.

Sheikh Ahmed served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and held several prominent roles in Dubai’s security, business and sporting sectors.

He was also the long-serving president of Al Wasl Sports Club, having been involved with the club since its early years. During his decades of leadership, Al Wasl developed into one of the UAE’s prominent sporting institutions.

Beyond football, Sheikh Ahmed played a role in the development of horse racing and maritime sports in Dubai. He was involved in establishing the Jebel Ali Racecourse and helped establish the Dubai International Marine Club, where he served as its first chairman.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed condolences to Sheikh Mohammed and the Al Maktoum family, highlighting Sheikh Ahmed’s longstanding contribution to the development of the UAE.

Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also mourned his uncle, describing him as a cherished member of the family who would remain in their hearts, memories and prayers. The official mourning period will continue for 10 days, until October 1, with flags across Dubai remaining at half-mast during the period.
