Super Falcons defender Michele Alozie has deactivated her Instagram account following a wave of criticism from Nigerian football fans after the team suffered a historic setback in their bid to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Alozie was among the Nigerian players who faced intense reactions online after the Super Falcons lost 2–1 to South Africa in the decisive World Cup qualification playoff.
The defeat ended Nigeria’s remarkable record of appearing at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991. The Super Falcons had been Africa’s most consistent representatives at the competition, making the failure to qualify an especially painful moment for Nigerian football.
Following the defeat, several Nigerian players came under heavy criticism on social media as disappointed supporters expressed their frustration over the team’s performance and the circumstances surrounding their elimination.
Alozie subsequently deactivated her Instagram account. Reports did not indicate that she had permanently deleted the account, nor did the defender publicly state why she chose to deactivate it. The timing, however, came amid the online backlash directed at members of the team.
The defeat to South Africa came after Nigeria’s earlier setback at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where the Falcons lost in the quarter-finals and were forced to pursue World Cup qualification through the playoff route.
Despite the disappointment, post-match analysis suggested that Nigeria’s performance against South Africa was not as poor as the final score indicated. The Falcons created several opportunities and recorded more shots and big chances than their opponents but struggled to convert their chances. South Africa ultimately secured the crucial victory.
Alozie, who has become one of the most recognisable members of the Super Falcons, has also enjoyed a strong international career with Nigeria, including appearances at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Her decision to step away from Instagram highlights the intense pressure national-team players can face from supporters, particularly after major tournament failures.
For now, the focus turns to what comes next for the Super Falcons and Nigerian women’s football. Missing the 2027 World Cup represents a major blow, but it also gives the Nigeria Football Federation and the team an opportunity to reassess their preparations, development structure and approach ahead of future competitions.
