Dangote Refinery Cuts Cooking Gas Price to ₦950 Per Kilogram

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reduced its depot price for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, to ₦950 per kilogram, offering potential relief to Nigerian households and businesses facing elevated energy costs.

The latest reduction was reported on August 14, with the refinery’s new LPG price adding to a series of price adjustments across Nigeria’s cooking-gas market.

The move is expected to put pressure on other suppliers and could encourage further reductions across the downstream LPG market. Already, 11 Plc has reportedly adjusted its price to ₦980 per kilogram, while some other major suppliers have maintained their existing rates.

For consumers, however, the refinery’s depot price does not necessarily translate into an immediate ₦950-per-kilogram retail price. The final amount paid by households can be higher depending on transportation costs, distributor margins, location and other operating expenses.

The latest reduction comes at a time when cooking-gas prices have remained volatile in Nigeria. Earlier price increases by major suppliers had pushed LPG costs higher, putting additional pressure on households that have increasingly turned to cooking gas as an alternative to kerosene, firewood and other cooking fuels.

Dangote Refinery has previously used price reductions to increase competition in Nigeria’s domestic energy market. The refinery’s expanding role in the downstream petroleum sector has also placed greater pressure on other suppliers to review their prices.

The reduction in LPG prices could therefore provide some relief for households if lower depot prices are passed through the distribution chain.

However, the extent of the impact will depend on how quickly marketers and retailers adjust their own prices. Consumers may not see the full benefit immediately, particularly in areas where transportation and distribution costs remain high.

With Dangote Refinery now offering cooking gas at ₦950 per kilogram, attention will turn to how competing gas suppliers respond and whether the latest reduction triggers a broader decline in LPG prices across Nigeria.
