Alibaba’s Qwen Surpasses 3 Billion Downloads, Overtaking Meta and Google

Alibaba’s Qwen artificial intelligence models have surpassed 3 billion global downloads in just six months, propelling the Chinese technology giant’s AI family ahead of models from Meta and Google in the open-model space.

The milestone makes Qwen the world’s most downloaded AI model family, according to figures reported from Hugging Face’s latest analysis of open AI models.

Qwen’s rapid growth highlights the increasing demand for AI models that developers can download, customise and integrate into their own applications. Unlike many proprietary AI systems that are primarily accessed through online services, open-weight models allow developers and companies greater flexibility to run and adapt the technology.

Alibaba said its Qwen ecosystem now includes more than 460 open models, while developers have created more than 300,000 derivative models based on the technology.

The scale of Qwen’s downloads puts it significantly ahead of major US technology companies in the latest open-model download figures. Google’s models recorded about 418 million downloads, while Meta’s models recorded roughly 227 million during the period covered by the latest data.

The development represents another major milestone for China’s rapidly expanding AI industry, which has increasingly challenged the dominance of US technology companies in artificial intelligence.

For Alibaba, Qwen has become a central part of its broader AI strategy. The company has continued releasing new models across areas including language, coding, reasoning and multimodal AI, helping create an ecosystem that extends beyond a single chatbot or application.

The 3 billion-download milestone also demonstrates the power of open AI models to spread rapidly among developers. Each download does not necessarily represent a unique user or an individual actively using Qwen, but the figure nevertheless provides an important measure of how widely the models are being accessed and adopted.

The surge comes as competition in the global AI market intensifies, with companies in the United States, China and elsewhere racing to develop increasingly capable models while also building large developer communities around them.

Qwen’s performance therefore goes beyond a simple download record. It signals the growing influence of Chinese-developed AI technology among developers worldwide and underscores how quickly the global AI landscape is changing.

With more than 3 billion downloads, 460-plus models and hundreds of thousands of derivatives, Alibaba’s Qwen has emerged as one of the biggest forces in the open AI ecosystem—putting the company in increasingly direct competition with technology giants such as Meta and Google.
