Argentina has introduced a new national holiday to commemorate its dramatic victory over England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal, turning July 15 into a permanent day of celebration for the country’s national football teams.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced the decision in an official statement on Wednesday, saying July 15 will now be recognised as National Football Teams Day. The date was selected to honour what the association described as a historic victory for the Albiceleste over England.
The new holiday, however, is intended to celebrate more than just the senior men’s national team. The AFA said the occasion would also recognise the achievements and contributions of all Argentine national football teams across different categories.
The semifinal victory itself provided a dramatic reason for the celebration. England initially took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon, who converted an opportunity created by Morgan Rogers and put the Three Lions ahead.
Argentina responded with determination, eventually finding an equaliser through Enzo Fernández after a brilliant delivery from captain Lionel Messi.
With the match heading into stoppage time, Argentina completed the turnaround in dramatic fashion. Messi again provided the decisive assist, setting up substitute Lautaro Martínez, who found the back of the net to give Argentina a 2–1 victory and send the South American champions into their second consecutive World Cup final.
The result sparked celebrations across Argentina as supporters poured into the streets to celebrate the comeback and another memorable World Cup campaign.
The AFA said the new national day is intended to preserve the significance of the occasion while also paying tribute to players and teams that have represented Argentina on the international stage.
The decision adds another chapter to Argentina’s rich football history and ensures that the dramatic semifinal victory over England will be remembered not simply as another World Cup result, but as a moment worthy of an annual national celebration.
