El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele Secures Ruling Party Nomination for Third Consecutive Term

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has officially secured the presidential nomination of his ruling Nuevas Ideas party, positioning him to seek a third consecutive term in office in the country’s next general election.

The nomination was confirmed by the ruling party after Bukele emerged as its sole candidate during the party’s primary election, paving the way for him to lead the party into the upcoming national vote. Vice President Félix Ulloa will once again join him on the ticket as his running mate.

Bukele’s latest nomination follows significant constitutional changes introduced in July 2025, when lawmakers aligned with the ruling party approved reforms that removed previous restrictions on presidential reelection. The constitutional amendment allows presidents to seek multiple consecutive terms, replacing earlier safeguards that limited continuous time in office.

The legal reforms have generated widespread political debate both within El Salvador and internationally, with supporters arguing that the changes give voters greater freedom to choose their preferred leader, while critics have raised concerns about the long-term implications for democratic institutions and constitutional checks and balances.

Despite the controversy, Bukele remains one of the most popular political figures in El Salvador. His administration continues to enjoy strong public support, largely due to an aggressive anti-crime strategy launched under a nationwide state of emergency in 2022. The security campaign, aimed at dismantling powerful criminal gangs, has significantly reduced violence in the country and has been credited by many Salvadorans with improving public safety.

Since taking office, Bukele has built his political image around restoring security, promoting infrastructure development and modernising government services. His tough stance on organised crime has attracted both praise from supporters and criticism from international human rights organisations over concerns about due process and civil liberties.

In the upcoming presidential election, Bukele is expected to face a candidate from the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), the left-wing political party from which he was expelled in 2017 before establishing his own political movement that later evolved into Nuevas Ideas.

At 44 years old, Bukele has transformed El Salvador’s political landscape, leading his party to overwhelming electoral victories and consolidating its influence across the country’s political institutions. His leadership has also attracted global attention for embracing digital innovation, including making Bitcoin legal tender and promoting technology-driven economic initiatives.

With the ruling party’s nomination now secured, Bukele is expected to campaign on his administration’s record of improving national security and economic development as he seeks another mandate from Salvadoran voters. The outcome of the election will be closely watched both across Latin America and internationally, given its significance for the country’s political future and the broader debate over presidential term limits and democratic governance.
