The Oyo State Government has confirmed the safe release of the pupils and teachers who were abducted from a school in Oriire Local Government Area, bringing an end to weeks of anxiety for their families and residents of the state.
The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when armed attackers stormed their school in Oriire Local Government Area, sparking widespread concern and prompting an extensive rescue effort involving multiple security agencies.
Announcing the development, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, described the victims’ release as a major victory for resilience, responsible leadership and the state’s unwavering commitment to tackling insecurity.
In a statement issued on behalf of the state government, Oyelade expressed relief that the abducted pupils and teachers had finally regained their freedom after spending several weeks in captivity.
“We are happy to report to our people in Oyo State that our children and teachers at Oriire have been released from captivity,” the statement read.
The commissioner said the incident tested the government’s resolve in confronting criminal elements and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to combating kidnapping without resorting to the payment of ransom.
According to Oyelade, Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration resisted pressure to adopt what he described as a “quick-fix” approach by refusing to pay ransom to the kidnappers. He argued that yielding to such demands would only strengthen criminal networks and encourage further abductions.
He maintained that the government’s decision reflected a long-term strategy aimed at addressing kidnapping and banditry through sustainable security measures rather than actions that could embolden criminal groups.
The commissioner also reiterated the administration’s determination to work closely with security agencies to improve public safety and eliminate kidnapping and other violent crimes across Oyo State.
While the government did not provide details of the rescue operation or disclose the circumstances surrounding the victims’ release, it praised the efforts of the security agencies involved in securing their freedom.
The successful release of the pupils and teachers brings relief to their families and the wider Oyo community, while reinforcing the state’s commitment to protecting lives and property through continued collaboration with security agencies and sustained efforts to curb criminal activities.
