Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated once again after Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, vowed to avenge the killing of his father and predecessor, while U.S. President Donald Trump warned that any attempt on his life would trigger an overwhelming military response.
The exchange of threats comes amid growing uncertainty over a fragile ceasefire agreement that was intended to halt months of conflict between Iran and the U.S.-backed Israeli military campaign. Although mediators continue to push for diplomacy, recent rhetoric from both sides has raised fresh concerns about the stability of the region.
In a written message released on Saturday, Mojtaba Khamenei declared that retaliation for the death of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei remained a national priority. “Vengeance is the will of our nation and must inevitably be carried out,” he said.
Khamenei assumed Iran’s highest leadership position after his father was killed during U.S.-Israeli strikes in late February. His latest statement marks his first public message since the funeral of the late supreme leader earlier this week.
He stressed that Iran’s response would not depend on any individual leader remaining in office. “This matter depends neither on my personal existence nor on that of other officials. Whether we are present or not, it will come to pass,” he wrote.
The new supreme leader also claimed that Iran had compiled a list of individuals it intends to target, although he did not provide further details.
Earlier on Saturday, President Trump issued a strong warning on his Truth Social platform, saying any attempt by Iran to assassinate him would be met with a devastating military response. According to Trump, the United States has already prepared extensive military plans should such a scenario arise.
He stated that “1,000 missiles are locked and loaded” and warned that the U.S. military was ready to launch further strikes capable of inflicting massive destruction on Iran if the country acted on any assassination threats against the American president.
The latest exchange follows renewed tensions despite an interim agreement reached last month that was designed to reduce hostilities after the conflict that erupted in late February following large-scale U.S.-Israeli strikes.
While President Trump has declared the ceasefire effectively over, diplomatic efforts are continuing behind the scenes in an attempt to prevent another escalation.
Iranian state-affiliated Tasnim News Agency reported that a delegation from Qatar visited Tehran on Friday as part of ongoing mediation efforts. The visit is aimed at strengthening Qatar’s role as a facilitator of dialogue between the two sides.
Despite his criticism of the negotiations, Trump has indicated that discussions with Iran are expected to continue, although he has previously described the talks as “a waste of time.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, however, insisted that Tehran has honored its commitments under the memorandum of understanding signed by both sides last month.
He maintained that Iran has upheld its obligations and emphasized that lasting progress can only be achieved if both countries continue to comply with the agreement.
As diplomatic efforts continue, the increasingly confrontational statements from leaders in Washington and Tehran have heightened international concerns over the possibility of renewed conflict. With mediators working to preserve dialogue, the coming days are expected to play a crucial role in determining whether diplomacy can withstand the latest surge in tensions.
