Reports Claim Millions of Dollars and Gold Seized in Iraq Anti-Corruption Raid

Authorities in Iraq have intensified a nationwide anti-corruption campaign, with reports alleging that security operatives recovered millions of dollars in cash, large quantities of gold and other valuable assets during raids targeting senior public officials and lawmakers.

Among the claims attracting widespread attention are reports that a search of the home of Iraqi lawmaker Hind Al-Abbasi uncovered approximately $57 million in cash, 27 kilograms of pure gold, and even gold-plated underwear. However, while the reports have circulated widely, Iraqi authorities have not officially confirmed these specific allegations or the items reportedly seized from the lawmaker’s residence.

The anti-corruption operation is part of a broader crackdown launched by the government of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, aimed at tackling the misuse of public funds and strengthening accountability within public institutions. Security forces reportedly carried out coordinated dawn raids across several locations, particularly in the capital, Baghdad.

According to reports, the operation led to the arrest of 47 suspects, including members of parliament, senior bureaucrats and other public officials. Authorities are said to be continuing their investigations, with indications that the probe could widen to include additional individuals.

Separately, Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council announced the seizure of significant assets during another corruption investigation involving a former deputy oil minister. Officials disclosed that investigators recovered approximately $10 million in cash, 3 billion Iraqi dinars, gold jewellery, multiple long-barrelled firearms and ammunition, along with nearly 40 properties believed to be linked to the case.

Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has reiterated his administration’s commitment to combating corruption, declaring that there will be no compromise in the government’s efforts to hold public officials accountable. He also suggested that the ongoing investigations could expand as authorities continue gathering evidence.

While Iraq’s anti-corruption campaign has resulted in multiple arrests and confirmed asset seizures, the widely circulated claims regarding the alleged discovery of $57 million, 27 kilograms of gold and gold-plated underwear at the home of MP Hind Al-Abbasi remain unverified by official government institutions. As investigations continue, further confirmation from Iraqi authorities is expected to clarify the accuracy of those reports.
